About This Event

The Miles for Kyle 5K is a road race usually held in Swampscott, Massachusetts consisting of a 1 Mile Walk and 5K run every October! This year would have marked the 15th annual event, and we are very much determined to continue this extremely special event for Kyle, our family, and our community of runners who look forward to participating each and every year.  We hope you'll join us

This event began in 2005 in an effort to support our son Kyle Butt. Kyle was diagnosed at 5 months old with a form of Pediatric Epilepsy called Infantile Spasms. As he grew, it was discovered that his epilepsy was caused by a malformation in three of the right lobes of his brain. In 2007, he underwent successful brain surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio to remove these portions of his brain and to this day is doing well. Since the surgery, Kyle's seizures have lessened dramatically. While our initial mission was to fundraise for Kyle to assist in his medical care, the event has evolved into a much bigger initiative over the last 11 years in not only raising money but awareness for pediatric epilepsy surgery and SUDEP (Sudden Death from Epilepsy).

For the past five years, all fundraising efforts have been and will continue to be donated to the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation to support their many efforts, specifically the placement of seizure detection dogs into families suffering from Epilepsy. Since partnering with the Chelsea Hutchison Foundation, we've been able to place 10 dogs into deserving families. Each trained dog can cost more than $15,000 and through the continued success of this event, it is our hope to continue to make a major difference in the lives of so many more families.
