Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Avenue,, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States, 02115

About This Event

In recognition of the emergence from one of the darkest periods in recent American history, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) will perform for the first time in 20 months on Friday, October 15, 2021, at 8:00 PM featuring Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony at Boston\'s Symphony Hall. The orchestra\'s conductor, Maestro Benjamin Zander, will provide a “Guide to the Music” talk prior to the concert at 6:45 PM.\ \ Zander considers the Eighth Symphony to be Bruckner’s greatest piece, and he wanted to return to live performance in the grandest way. “When I found out that all the concerts were to take place in Symphony Hall, I could hardly contain my excitement,” said Zander. “Immediately I thought we should break the twenty-month silence with Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony, not only because Bruckner’s music lifts us to the highest spiritual plane, but because of the nature of the hall itself. There is simply no more beautiful space in America, or perhaps anywhere else, in which to hear this music.”\ \ The concert is the first of four BPO concerts, continuing its tradition of presenting thrilling performances of orchestral masterpieces and bringing exciting soloists to Boston audiences. The other concerts include:\ \ Wednesday, November 10, 8 PM\ Mendelssohn The Hebrides\ Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2\ Stefan Jackiw, violin\ Brahms Symphony No. 4\ Guide to the music with Benjamin Zander at 6:45 pm\ \ \ Sunday, February 6, 2022, 3 PM\ Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1\ Andrei Ioniță, cello\ Beethoven Symphony No. 3, “Eroica”\ Guide to the music with Benjamin Zander at 1:45 pm\ \ Friday, April 8, 2022, 8 PM\ Mahler Symphony No. 3\ Susan Platts, mezzo-soprano & Chorus Pro Musica\ Guide to the music with Benjamin Zander at 6:45 pm\ \ Tickets are available at or by calling 617-236-0999.
